10 Questions with Fold&Sew Founder Daneá Boquet

Q: You have been sewing for most of your life. How did that background shape Fold&Sew?

I have always sewn. I learned from watching my mom and other women in my life, but I was never one for following exact directions. My mom is methodical and precise whereas I am more of an experimenter. I love that Fold&Sew makes it easy for people like me to enter the world of craft and quilting.

Q: What was it about traditional quilting that never quite fit for you?

I actually like cutting paper. I worked in a scrapbooking store and loved that part of it. But I hated cutting fabric. One wrong move and you cannot undo it. My mother-in-law quilts too, so quilting was always around me, but cutting and piecing tiny sections together was not my favorite part of the process.

Q: When did the idea for no-cut quilt kits really take hold?

In 2023, I made a baby quilt for a friend’s daughter. When I finished it and started to ship it, I stopped and thought, “Wait, I really like this. What if I could make it again?” Then the bigger question came. What if there was a way to replicate quilts more easily, without all the cutting and piecing? I started wondering why this was not already a thing.

Q: Is there anything similar to Fold&Sew on the market?

No, and that surprised me. I assumed someone had already done it. When I could not find anything similar, I decided to try creating it myself. I designed the first layouts in Photoshop and sent a sample to a custom fabric shop just to see if it would work. It did, and that was the moment I knew this could actually become something real.

Q: How did Little Cocalico enter the picture?

I knew I needed a printer who could handle detailed, sometimes unconventional files. I asked around, and someone gave me Little Cocalico’s name. I started sending these very specific files to John. Some worked, some did not, but we always figured it out together. That problem-solving aspect was huge for me.

I love working with Little Cocalico. When I was searching early on, I kept running into issues elsewhere. Low quality, slow turnaround, limited personalization, or just a lack of collaboration. Q: Many quilts are deeply personal. How does Fold&Sew support that?

There is still so much room for personal touch. I made one for a friend going through cancer treatment. It was practical but also very personal. I prayed over it while making it. Q: You are also developing quiltlets. What are those?

Quiltlets are basically strips that let you apply quilt designs to non-quilt items. Think jeans, hats, purses, table runners, baby bibs, totes, even jackets. It opens up a lot of creative possibilities without asking people to cut tiny strips of fabric themselves.

Q: Where do you find inspiration for new designs?

I do a lot of listening. I pay attention to what people are looking for, what they like but cannot find. Then I mix that with my own ideas and preferences. It is a really fun process.

Q: What advice would you give other entrepreneurs trying to build something new?

Talk to everyone. You might not find exactly what or who you need right away, but persistence matters. Eventually, you will connect with the right resource or solution. As Dory says, “Just keep swimming.”
