Tips for Designing and Printing Custom Fabric Banners for Weddings

As a custom fabric provider, we love getting to work with so many creative people and be a part, in a small way, of many unique projects and events, including weddings.

That’s right, we often get custom orders for fabric wedding banners. We’ve printed beautifully designed reception guest lists, food menus, bar menus, etc… After hearing the common questions people ask about designing and printing custom banners, we decided to compile a guide on how to design and order fabric wedding banners.

4 Steps to Custom Fabric Wedding Banners

Step 1: Choose Your Fabric Type

We recommend this as the first step since it helps to know what fabric you’ll be using before beginning your design. Fabrics come in different print widths, so knowing the width of the fabric you’ll be using for the banners will help you create a design that maximizes the space.

We have found that our Linen Cotton Canvas is a great all-around fabric choice for wedding banners. It offers the structure required for a hanging banner while still giving the luxurious look and feel of linen.

If you want to see and feel all of the options that we carry you can pick up one of our sample packs which includes a printed swatch of all our stock fabric types.

Step 2: Create the Design File for Your Wedding Banner

This is the step that requires the most work from you. To place an order for your custom fabric wedding banner, you’ll need to have a full-size design file to upload to our custom fabric order page. Here’s a few items to keep in mind as you create your banners and signage.

File Size and Design Layout

Our fabric is printed and sold by the yard (36″ increments). Once you know which fabric you’ll order, you can then determine what size file you need to create (based on the width of the fabric) in order to take full advantage of the space in your order. We recommend creating your design to fill the entire fabric width and length so that you can place your banners exactly where you want them. If you order multiple yards for one design it will print as one, large piece of fabric.

Let’s look at these example files:

Example #1: 40×70 Wedding Banner on Linen Cotton Canvas (57″ print width)

For this wedding welcome banner, the 70″ length means that it will require a two yard print. So the design file is set at 57″ wide for the width of the fabric and 72″ long for the print length (2 yards). You then place the design inside this file and export the whole file to upload for printing.

Example #2: 40×48 Reception Menu Sign and Fabric Invitations

In this scenario, the reception menu requires a 2-yard file since both the width and height are larger than 36″. So a full 2 yard print file (57×72 ) is created and the menu design is placed inside the file. Then the extra space is filled with two 20×28 invitations that can be used for decoration. This is then exported as one entire file and uploaded to our website to be printed.

Step 3: Place the Order

Our custom uploader is designed to make the ordering process easy for you. Here’s the steps to follow to upload your file and place your order.

  1. Upload to our custom upload page. The preview tool will automatically scale to the original size of your design but you’ll want to double check the scaling preview to ensure that you have it to the correct size.
  2. Choose the fabric type that you want to order. We offer a wide variety of high quality fabrics for custom prints.
  3. Choose your fabric size. In most cases you will want to choose the “Yard” option unless your design is smaller than 21”x18”. In that case you could use the “fat quarter” option.
  4. Select quantity to choose how many yards you need printed. Be sure to choose the amount of yards needed to print your entire design. For example: if your design is 57” x 108” you will need to choose three yards of fabric.

Step 4: Receive Your Custom Printed Fabric

Now it is our turn to get to work. You can sit back and relax knowing that your order is in good hands!

After we receive your order, we will print and ship within three business days. You will receive the tracking information once it ships out and you can expect to see it within a few days. After receiving it, you can then cut out anything you need to and prepare the fabric for the special day.
