10 Questions with Fold&Sew Founder Daneá Boquet
The quilting world is rich with tradition, but hungry for something fresh. That is exactly why innovations like custom fabric printing and no-cut quilt kits have recently revolutionized how many quilts are made.
One of the biggest shifts in recent years came with pre-cut quilt kits, where someone else did the most time-consuming part of the process. You bought the kit, skipped the cutting, and focused on sewing it all together.
As digital custom fabric printing and modern design programs advanced, so did quilting innovation. Companies like Little Cocalico made it possible to print detailed designs directly onto fabric, removing the need for cutting altogether. Suddenly, no-cut quilt kits were no longer limited by what could be pre-packaged or mass produced. Custom designs, cleaner lines, and more flexibility became part of the process.
This innovation is exactly where Fold&Sew found its footing.
Founded by Daneá Boquet, Fold&Sew’s patent-pending no-cut quilt kits eliminate hours of cutting and piecing while preserving the creativity and personal expression that draw people to quilting in the first place. From the beginning, every Fold&Sew design has been printed exclusively with Little Cocalico.
We sat down with Daneá to discuss her Fold&Sew journey, the mass appeal of no-cut quilt kits, and her sage advice for entrepreneurs like her.
I have always sewn. I learned from watching my mom and other women in my life, but I was never one for following exact directions. My mom is methodical and precise whereas I am more of an experimenter. I love that Fold&Sew makes it easy for people like me to enter the world of craft and quilting.
I actually like cutting paper. I worked in a scrapbooking store and loved that part of it. But I hated cutting fabric. One wrong move and you cannot undo it. My mother-in-law quilts too, so quilting was always around me, but cutting and piecing tiny sections together was not my favorite part of the process.
In 2023, I made a baby quilt for a friend’s daughter. When I finished it and started to ship it, I stopped and thought, “Wait, I really like this. What if I could make it again?” Then the bigger question came. What if there was a way to replicate quilts more easily, without all the cutting and piecing? I started wondering why this was not already a thing.
No, and that surprised me. I assumed someone had already done it. When I could not find anything similar, I decided to try creating it myself. I designed the first layouts in Photoshop and sent a sample to a custom fabric shop just to see if it would work. It did, and that was the moment I knew this could actually become something real.
I knew I needed a printer who could handle detailed, sometimes unconventional files. I asked around, and someone gave me Little Cocalico’s name. I started sending these very specific files to John. Some worked, some did not, but we always figured it out together. That problem-solving aspect was huge for me.
I love working with Little Cocalico. When I was searching early on, I kept running into issues elsewhere. Low quality, slow turnaround, limited personalization, or just a lack of collaboration. With Little Cocalico, I can send something over, troubleshoot it together, and know we will land on a solution. They have helped my business become what it is today, and I recommend them all the time.
Another thing that makes Little Cocalico great was that they are willing to take on a small yardage order like mine. Little Cocalico was willing to print a single yard for me. Also, most custom printers only print on non-natural fiber materials, like polyester. Little Cocalico is unique in that they not only print on natural fiber fabrics, but they also offer so many wonderful fabric options to choose from.
There are so many benefits. They save space. They are much quicker to assemble. If you are trying to produce quilts efficiently, this is it. They can also be a safety option for people who cannot risk cuts or strain from traditional quilting. For beginners, it is a great starting point because you can begin by sewing a straight line and customize from there.
They’re also accessible. For example, if someone has arthritis, limited motor skills, or other health challenges, Fold&Sew allows them to keep doing something they love. It removes a barrier that might otherwise push them away from quilting as they age or deal with physical limitations.
There is still so much room for personal touch. I made one for a friend going through cancer treatment. It was practical but also very personal. I prayed over it while making it. A lot of these quilts end up being gifts, and I would guess most are given rather than kept. That makes them incredibly meaningful.
Quiltlets are basically strips that let you apply quilt designs to non-quilt items. Think jeans, hats, purses, table runners, baby bibs, totes, even jackets. It opens up a lot of creative possibilities without asking people to cut tiny strips of fabric themselves.
I do a lot of listening. I pay attention to what people are looking for, what they like but cannot find. Then I mix that with my own ideas and preferences. It is a really fun process.
Talk to everyone. You might not find exactly what or who you need right away, but persistence matters. Eventually, you will connect with the right resource or solution. As Dory says, “Just keep swimming.”
