How to Install Peel and Stick Wallpaper

A guide for installing our DIY Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Before Your Start

Our Peel and Stick Wallpaper is designed to be easy to install. We recommend using two people for installation to help make handling and applying the rolls go smoother and keep the adhesive from sticking together of folding against itself. If the wallpaper does roll up or stick together during installation, very carefully pull it apart and continue with installation.

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Water and lint-free cleaning cloth
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Straightedge
  • Pencil
  • Utility Knife
  • 6-8″ Plastic Drywall Knife
  • Step Stool/Small Ladder

Clean the Wall/Surface

  • Use a warm, damp lint-free cloth or sponge to clean the wall surface and allow it to completely dry.
  • For better adhesion, you can add alcohol to cleaning water. Make sure all previous cleaning solutions are completely gone.
  • A clean wall is very important – try to minimize dust in the room during installation. You can remove and replace this wallpaper multiple times; however, once the adhesive collects too much dust, dirt and fibers it will become less effective and it may not stick as well to the surface.

Measure for First Panel

  • Choose your starting corner
  • Measure the width of your first panel. Transfer that measurement to the wall – measuring from your starting corner in the direction of the install.
  • From your pencil mark, use a straightedge and level (or a line laser) to draw a line from ceiling to baseboard trim. This line/guide will you to apply the first panel in a straight line.
  • Turn off the electrical circuits and remove any outlet or switch cover plates that on the wall(s) being covered.

Applying First Panel

  • Starting at the top of your wallpaper panel, slowly peel the backer downward 4-6″ and crease the backer so it lays back. Apply the exposed adhesive area to the top starting corner, ensuring the edge lines up with your guide line. If you need to reposition, simply pull it off slowly and reapply as many times as needed until you get the right position. Then smooth the applied area. You can use a plastic drywall knife (6-8″ wide) if needed to smooth.
  • Once squarely positioned, continue to slowly pull the backer downwards in 4-6″ increments, pressing and smoothing the wallpaper as you go. It may be helpful if one person pulls down the backer, while the other smooths the surface against the wall.
  • Apply all the way to the bottom of the wall, then use a straight edge and a sharp knife to cut at the baseboard trim or the bottom of the applied area.
  • If there are any bubbles or wrinkles, lightly press or smooth them out. You can also peel back the drywall to that area and re-apply.

Matching Patterns/Panels

  • If applying multiple wallpaper panels, be sure to line up the wallpaper’s pattern to ensure a seamless look. Panel patterns should generally match starting at the the top of the panel (the beginning of the roll).
  • Overlap as needed to match the pattern and continue to apply each panel as you did the first.

Windows and Obstacles

  • If applying wallpaper on walls with windows or other obstacles (light switches, receptacles, etc…), apply the wallpaper over the window or obstacle and continue to apply all the way to the bottom.
  • Once the panel has been applied and smoothed, trim around the window/obstacle and remove the excess. Use a straight edge and a sharp knife to ensure a clean edge.
  • Smooth out the wallpaper edges for a clean, finished look.

Other Installation Tips

  • If a bubble appears in the days after installation, sometimes pressing and lightly rubbing can remove it. This bubble can form from oil, dust, or dirt that was on the wall surface.
  • You may also use a pin to pop the bubble, smoothing it afterwards with your fingers in slow circular motions.
